Our engagement should have been a joyful announcement, but things took an unexpected turn when my fiancé’s brother, Adam, revealed he was getting married just two weeks later. At a lavish dinner, his unexpected demand for us to pay the $3,000 bill exposed his true character.
I’m Natasha, and life with Emmet has been amazing. After three years together, he proposed, and we were excited to plan our future. A year ago, my father passed away, leaving me an inheritance, part of which was meant for our wedding. It was a bittersweet reminder that he’d always be with me.
Three weeks ago, we shared our engagement news with Emmet’s family. Then, a week later, Adam and his fiancée, Nancy, announced their wedding would happen in two weeks—out of nowhere. It was a surprise, especially since they had recently asked me for a loan. Two weeks later, we were at an expensive restaurant, celebrating their wedding.
As we sat in awe of the lavish setting, Emmet and I wondered how they could afford this. But when dessert came, Nancy turned to me, asking if I would cover the dinner. I was taken aback. I explained we had already given them a wedding gift, but she insisted, citing my inheritance. The whole room went silent.
I calmly replied, “Emmet and I will pay for our meals. Next time, pick a place you can afford.” Nancy and Adam were stunned, and the tension in the room was palpable. I made sure we only covered our own meals, and when the others were shocked by the bills, Nancy tried to backtrack, but it was too late.
The damage was done, and our family saw Adam and Nancy’s true colors. Later, Emmet comforted me, and I felt relieved we’d stood up for ourselves.
Months later, our wedding was everything we dreamed of—simple, heartfelt, and filled with love. Surrounded by genuine family and friends, we celebrated with joy. As the night went on, Nancy apologized for the dinner incident. I accepted her apology, hoping we could move on.
Emmet and I stood together, looking at our future with happiness and confidence. “This is perfect,” he said, as we stepped into our new life, hand in hand.
