Emma and her new husband, Dylan, were enjoying their first dance when the hotel manager interrupted to tell her her grandmother, Martha, was outside. Emma, who hadn’t invited Martha, reluctantly went to see her. Martha handed her a small jewelry box, which Emma scornfully threw aside, only to find a beautiful emerald ring inside. The note that came with it revealed that Martha had kept the bakery for her, not herself, and explained her actions in a way Emma had never known.
Years ago, Emma had asked Martha for help to save her father from jail, but Martha refused, leading to his death. Emma had never forgiven her. But now, as she held the ring, she realized the complexity of Martha’s choices.
Emma went to Martha’s house the next day, only to find it sold. The neighbor revealed that Martha had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and had moved away to give Emma the house. Desperate for answers, Emma tracked Martha to a rundown motel, only to learn that Martha had died the night before.
Devastated and filled with regret, Emma’s grief consumed her as she realized how little she truly knew of her grandmother’s sacrifices.
