Lauren always believed her husband Mike disliked traveling, but his behavior this year left her confused. When a family vacation reached a breaking point, she decided to uncover the truth.
She was planning a trip to the Virgin Islands with her mom and kids, but Mike, as usual, resisted. “It’s too far,” he said. When she booked the tickets without him, the kids were ecstatic, but Mike’s distance and odd behavior continued. His phone calls were short, and he seemed to withdraw emotionally.
Once back home, Lauren found Mike on the couch with a woman she didn’t recognize. After an awkward exchange, Mike revealed that the woman was his therapist. He admitted he had been hiding a deep fear of flying, which caused his resistance to family trips. He had been avoiding the truth because he was embarrassed.
Mike explained that he had been seeing a therapist to overcome his phobia, hoping to eventually join the family on a trip. Lauren, relieved by his honesty, realized this fear had kept them apart. They agreed to work together on it, planning for future vacations as a family. For the first time in years, they were united, planning rather than arguing.
