When my brother-in-law, Mason, asked to stay for “just a week,” I never imagined he’d overstay his welcome by six months. It all began with a simple favor—Mason, recently unemployed and fresh out of a breakup, needed a place to crash. My husband, Asher, convinced me to let him stay, promising it would only be temporary.
But weeks turned into months, and Mason showed no signs of leaving. He treated our home like a frat house, leaving dirty dishes and clutter everywhere, and contributing nothing. I was exhausted, cleaning up after him daily. When I confronted Asher, he sympathized with Mason, but refused to kick him out. It was a constant battle between maintaining peace for Asher and protecting our home.
Then, I found out I was pregnant. I hoped this would motivate Mason to get serious, but when I told him, he brushed it off, asking if we could keep the baby quiet at night so it wouldn’t disturb him. That was the last straw.
Desperate, I called Asher’s mother, Maggie, to ask for help. After hearing my frustrations, Maggie agreed to talk to Mason. The next day, she managed to convince him to move out. I felt relieved, but that peace didn’t last long. Two weeks later, Maggie showed up with Mason, announcing that they both planned to stay with us until the baby arrived. It felt like a nightmare all over again.
Mason was back, and this time, Maggie was along for the ride. They settled in like they owned the place, turning my home into a chaotic, crowded space. I realized I was in for a much bigger battle than I ever anticipated. If anyone has advice on how to handle this, I could really use it.
