Mia’s mom had kept her distance for three months during house renovations, but something felt off. When Mia arrived unannounced, she found the door unlocked and the house unusually clean, with a strange smell.
The garden was overgrown, and everything felt too sterile. Inside, Mia noticed a photo of them at the beach, smudged with fingerprints, which was odd since her mom was always meticulous. As she called for her mom, she heard a faint noise upstairs.
She found her mother frail and weak, with a scarf covering her head. “I have cancer,” her mom confessed, revealing she’d been undergoing chemotherapy alone to protect Mia from the burden. Shocked and angry, Mia insisted she should have been there for her.
Later, as her mom shared her story, Mia promised to be her rock. She moved in, took time off work, and cared for her mom until her passing. In her final moments, her mom apologized for broken promises, but Mia reassured her, saying what mattered was the love they’d shared. Holding her mom in her last moments, Mia realized that love is about showing up, even in the hardest times.
