Am I Wrong for Testing My Mother-in-Law on Christmas?

I entered my mother-in-law Diane’s grand mansion on Christmas, determined to test her true nature with two gifts: one expensive and luxurious, the other personal and sentimental.

Richard and I had eloped after meeting at work, despite coming from different backgrounds—he from wealth, and I from humble beginnings. Diane had dismissed our small ceremony as “cheap” and expected something grand. So, I wanted to see which gift she’d value more.

The first gift I gave her was a hand-painted stone of her cat, Mittens. Diane’s response was dismissive, saying it was “cute” but didn’t fit her style. Her second gift to me was a $20 movie theater gift card, which felt thoughtless.

Then I gave her the Gucci bag, knowing it would spark her interest. She immediately inspected it, assuming Richard had bought it. When Richard corrected her, saying I bought it myself, Diane’s attitude shifted. Richard stood up for me, telling her she cared more about the expensive gift than the one from the heart.

Diane’s forced smile and her tight grip on the Gucci bag revealed what truly mattered to her. I knew then that Diane’s true values were clear—and at least I had my answer.
