My Boyfriend’s Mom Kept Calling Me the Wrong Name, So I Caused a Thanksgiving Full of ‘Yelling’ & ‘Crying’

When my boyfriend’s mom, Melissa, kept calling me “Scarlett” instead of Jasmine, I initially thought it was a mistake. But after months of this, I realized it was deliberate. So, this Thanksgiving, I decided to serve her a dish she’d never forget.

Two years ago, I met Arnold at work, and we instantly clicked. Our relationship was perfect—until I met his family. Melissa constantly brought up Arnold’s ex-girlfriend, Scarlett, and I soon realized I was constantly compared to her. Melissa even started calling me “Scarlett” repeatedly, despite my polite corrections.

After Arnold confronted her, she began calling me other wrong names, refusing to acknowledge me as Jasmine. I decided to handle it on my own, so when Thanksgiving arrived and she suggested “Jennifer” cook the turkey, I took it as an opportunity to teach her a lesson.

I pretended to forget the turkey, replying, “Oh, I thought you told Jennifer to cook it.” The room went silent as Melissa realized what I was doing. She erupted in anger, and Arnold stepped in, telling her she needed to respect me. Chaos followed, but I stood my ground.

The next day, Melissa sent Arnold a text criticizing me. Arnold stood by me, telling his mom if she couldn’t respect me, they needed time apart.

I don’t regret what I did. Sometimes you have to stand up for yourself, even if it causes a scene. And who knows? Maybe next Thanksgiving, Melissa will finally remember my name.
