Life in Rural Ohio and West Virginia, 1886-1912

Between 1886 and 1912, traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing captured everyday moments of rural life in southeastern Ohio and central West Virginia. One such photograph, taken around 1896-1912, shows a man and woman using a two-man saw, a tool essential for cutting timber in the dense forests of the region. Ewing’s images offer a glimpse into the lives of people who lived and worked in these rugged landscapes, documenting their daily routines, labor, and resourcefulness. His work preserves the legacy of the hardworking communities that shaped this area at the turn of the century.
