an 1855-born “Arkansas Hoosier” Conway, Arkansas. “My dad served in the Confederate Army. In order to enter the army, he presented his age as one year older than it was. He cleared 280 acres he purchased from the railroad after the war. It was never mortgaged to us. The land was sold in 1920, and the proceeds were split. None of my kids own their land now. Though it’s all gone now, it brought up my family. I believe I have fulfilled my responsibility. I’ve brought up twelve kids.”
