Photographs by Joe Clark HBSS documented daily life in Claiborne County from the past. Take, for instance, this 1940s photo titled “Aunt Nora Treece Tying a Broom.” This was a common task for the older generation, yet it is something few of us today have ever experienced.
While looking at the picture and thinking about her method, also consider this: she could have easily bought a broom from a store. They were available at most country stores even in her time. Whether she chose to make the broom or did so out of financial necessity, the fact remains that she knew how to make one. This is a skill that very few people possess today.
