West Virginia and Ohio, 1896–1912…

A split-rail fence frames a portrait of four young women and one young guy, who appear to be siblings, sitting against a mountainside. With their arms wrapped around each other, the two girls in the back row smile. Albert J. Ewing, a traveling photographer, captured this image sometime between 1896 and 1912. The location was somewhere between central West Virginia and southeast Ohio, just like the majority of Ewing’s photographs.
