DUBLIN — Local sports fan Niall Cremmond has boldly declared that he plans to stay up until nearly 4 a.m. to watch Katie Taylor’s highly anticipated trilogy fight against Amanda Serrano — not out of national pride or genuine support, but purely to be first online with a scathing “overrated” post if she loses.
“Sure, it’s ridiculously late, but it’ll be worth it if I can type out a long, smug rant about how she was always overrated,” Cremmond explained, rubbing his hands together in anticipation. “I’m happy to sacrifice sleep for that sweet, sweet social media engagement.”
Cremmond, who has never once posted about other Irish fighters — especially those who haven’t fought in years — insists he has no idea why he’s so motivated to tear down Taylor, the five-time amateur world champion, Olympic gold medalist, and two-weight undisputed world champion, widely considered one of the best female boxers ever.
“I dunno, I just get annoyed when I see everyone so united and positive about her. It makes me want to remind them that they’re not real fans like me,” he said. “I’ve been watching boxing for ages, so I feel like it’s my duty to gatekeep and ruin everyone’s good time.”
When pressed further, Cremmond admitted he would likely be watching alone in his living room, ready to hit “post” the second the final bell rings.
