For years, Monica’s mother-in-law, Lina, gave her porcelain dolls for Christmas. Monica thought they were just family heirlooms and kept them hidden away in her closet. But one Christmas, when Monica was clearing out her closet, her husband Andy reacted horrified upon seeing them.
Andy explained that in his culture, the dolls weren’t just decorative but were used to absorb negative energy from the home. However, once they were full, they released that energy back, becoming toxic. Andy burned the dolls to prevent any harm. Monica was shocked, especially when Lina later said she should have known better and learned their traditions.
Monica realized how much she still had to learn about Andy’s cultural background. Though frustrated, she was eager to start their own traditions together.
Moral of the story: Always ask questions and understand the significance behind gifts, especially when it comes to cultural differences.
