I never expected to see Jacob, my ex-fiancé, again, especially not as a beggar in Central Park. Confronting him unveiled a shocking betrayal that shattered everything I thought I knew about my past.
After catching up with my friend Eric in New York, I took a stroll through Central Park. The city always reminded me of Jacob, and as I wandered, I spotted him—disheveled and begging on a bench. My heart stopped. It was Jacob.
“Jacob?” I asked, approaching him cautiously. His eyes widened. “Nina? It’s really you.”
We sat down at a café, and he told me a heartbreaking story. On the day of our wedding, my father had him kidnapped and beaten, leaving him with amnesia. Without a past, he wandered the streets, eventually ending up homeless. I was stunned. Could my father really have done this?
Jacob’s story was wild, but the pain in his eyes seemed real. He wanted me to understand, but I didn’t know what to believe.
The next morning, I returned to Central Park, hoping to find answers. I called my father, and he confirmed his involvement—though he claimed he only paid Jacob to leave me. Enraged, I hung up.
As I sat on the bench where I’d spoken to Jacob, I realized my purse was missing. Had he taken it? My trust shattered once again. Everything I thought I knew about Jacob and my father felt like a lie.
I couldn’t dwell on the betrayal. It was time to move on, though the weight of the past would linger.
